– Ludwig Van Beethoven

Music is a universal language. They say that you can communicate across cultures and borders in ways you can’t with ordinary languages such as English or Mandarin.

Other than school and tuition, more parents in Singapore are bringing their beloved children to music lessons to learn new skills. Cultivating local talents, Singapore has been supportive of her arts scene where music events are often organised by the government, the NAC (National Arts Council) and music communities. This encourages children and even adults to take on music lessons to hone a new skill. You know never when the next JJ Lin, Stefanie Sun, Joanna Dong or Jasmine Sokko will be born.

Many would not know that music can actually be taken as an ‘O’ or ‘A’ Level subject. This provides students with more opportunities to showcase their talents and aid their studies. Students may even further their music studies at art schools such as NAFA (Nanyang Academy Of Fine Arts), NUS YST (National University Of Singapore Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music) or overseas universities. Worry not if you are an adult student looking for lessons outside for there are many private music schools available as well.

However, music education in Singapore does not come cheap. The cost increases over time.

It is definitely fun and fulfilling to pick up a new instrument. Imagine playing the violin, the piano, the drums or singing beautiful songs in tune. Learning Different Instruments And Their Costs

Lending Bee Music Education Loans Piano Financing

1. Piano

Piano is one of the most popular instruments and it has a huge range of at least 7 octaves. For piano lessons, the cost usually starts at $180 per month for 45 minutes, once a week. The fees usually depend on where the lesson is held at and how experienced the teachers are. It usually costs more if the lesson is held at the student’s home as the teacher has to spend time and money travelling.

As the student improves, the piano lesson fees and duration will increase as well. Lesson duration can increase up to 1.5 hours including theory practices. The higher the music grade, the higher the lesson fees and eventually when the student reaches Grade 8, it will cost $400 per month.

Parents will also have to consider extra fees for exams and the purchase of instruments. A basic piano costs at least $3,000. Of course, there are varying qualities of pianos. Better ones cost $8,000 and the price of a grand piano is at least $35,000. Other than lesson fees and the cost of the instrument, there will be exam fees as well. Depending on how much practice the candidates need, they will have to pay for room bookings to test out the exam piano as well.

All in all, the average cost of learning the piano until grade 8 would likely be in the upwards of $30,000.

Lending Bee Music Education Loans Violin Financing

2. Violin

Just like piano lessons, the cost of violin lessons will be based on factors like the location of the classes, the individual’s level of learning and the teacher’s credentials. It generally begins from $120 for 30-minute lessons or $180 for 45-minute lessons and increases as the level goes up.

Buying a basic beginner violin costs around $150. As with all other instruments, the better the quality, the more expensive it becomes. A high-quality violin can easily cost at least $3,500. One thing to note about learning violins is that there are different sizes for children. Violin sizes start from 1/8 and increases to 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and finally 4/4 (full size violins). This means that as the child grows, he or she will need to change their violin several times.

By grade 8, parents or individuals would be paying at least $400 per month for violin lessons. Completing all 8 levels of the violin would be an estimated upwards cost of $30,000.

Lending Bee Music Education Loans Drums Financing

3. Drums

While violin and piano lessons are widely popular, some parents are also interested in sending their children to learn other musical instruments that may be regarded as unconventional or exotic. One of the musical instruments that more children are learning is the drum.

The beginning cost of drum lessons is comparatively cheaper than learning to play the violin or piano. It starts from $120 and will increase up to $360. The main concern for learning the drums would be purchasing a drum set to practice. A basic full drum set costs around $600 and the family will have to prepare to soundproof the room so as not to disturb the neighbours. If the student chooses not to get his or her own drum set, they can rent studios or rooms in music schools to practice.

In Singapore, students often choose to go for Rock School or Trinity examinations. The average cost of learning drums until the advanced level is at an estimated $25,000 or more. If the lessons are taken during weekends or during weeknights, the costs may be slightly higher so the student has to prepare a larger budget for that.

Lending Bee Music Education Loans Guitar Financing

4. Guitar

When people hear about guitars, the image of Elvis Presley singing and playing the guitar might come to mind. There are three types of guitars, namely the acoustic guitar, the classical guitar and the electric guitar. Most music schools offer lessons for acoustic and classical guitar. A fun fact is that the guitar is the preferred choice for parents who want their children to gain the experience of playing a musical instrument because you most likely don’t have to spend a fortune.

Getting a first-hand beginner guitar only costs around $120 and a second-hand guitar costs even less. Guitar lesson materials can be easily found online and learning the guitar does not place as much focus on passing exams. Children can appreciate and enjoy the learning process much more. Individual guitar lessons will be more expensive than group lessons.

It’s never too late or too early to pick up an instrument. You’ll be impressed by the benefits learning music brings and you’d wish you had started sooner.

Learning Music Is A Form Of Investment

Picking up an instrument or learning how to sing is not only a hobby, but a form of investment as well! Not only does learning music help to increase your confidence, your ability to analyse, lower anxiety levels, you can use your skills to bring in some income as well.

Teaching

Aside from healthcare, education in any form is a profitable industry especially in Singapore. This is where the big money is if you’re not a famous musician. Many parents are willing to pay a premium to ensure that their children get a head start in life. Teaching music can definitely help you earn a good amount of money.

While teaching can be a lucrative career, it is important to ensure that you’re good at the instrument of your choice. Have good basics and a good amount of knowledge and the career is relatively easy to get into. You can offer private lessons to students at an hourly fee, or teach at a school. You can also choose to teach music part-time if you’re a university student or a full-timer looking for an extra source of income.

It is also important to note that the choice of musical instrument is also important. It will be helpful if the instrument you’re good at is in demand. For example, most parents opt for piano lessons for their children. Piano teachers earn a minimum of $40 for a 45-minute lesson with beginners. The rate is higher for more advanced levels.

Playing at Bars

Many great musicians start out playing at bars and cafes. Musicians can do solo acts or perform in bands at these places. You may often see a singer and a guitarist playing at a bar or a small band jamming to the crowd’s favourite songs.

Securing a paid gig is difficult and getting your foot in the door for more popular pubs is even harder. You will need industry contacts to succeed. It is therefore best to start with the smaller bars and cafes. Work hard and gain experience first and success will come later. However, you can’t expect to be offered the more lucrative Friday and Saturday nights when you first start performing.

Playing gigs can earn you about $150 per night per person though sometimes, many new bands may be paid lower than that.

Playing and Working at Music Shops

Music shops often hire skilled and experienced musicians to perform and run the shop in the hopes of attracting potential customers and to increase sales. One shop in Singapore that does this would be Synwin.

The shop sells string instruments and the staff at the shop are all skilled in violins or cellos so as to explain the musical technicalities well to customers.

Aside from playing music, they will have to be a salesperson or a promoter as well to bring profits to the company. Working at music shops simply mean that you’ll get to play your favourite instruments any time while receiving a reasonable income.
