Different funerals have different requirements and costs. No matter the cost, Lending Bee® can help.
When a funeral occurs, it’s not only the setting up of the funeral procession that you have to prepare for. There are various other factors that will affect the cost of holding a funeral. They are:
Placing an obituary in the papers is not a requirement for holding a funeral in Singapore. However, announcing the death of your loved one is a good way to let all your relatives and friends know about the details of the funeral and the wake.
The cost of placing an obituary will vary depending on the size of the obituary as well as the paper you place it with. The smallest sized obituary costs about $1,348.20. The price increases depending on how large you want the obituary to be.
The wake gives loved ones an opportunity to gather in memory of the deceased. The cost of the wake will depend on the location you choose to hold it in. You can choose to hold the wake at home or at a funeral parlor.
There are benefits to the different locations available for holding a wake.
1. Funeral Parlour
This is the most expensive option for holding a wake. However, it is also the most convenient and easiest option. The funeral home will take care of all the arrangements and therefore, allow you and your loved ones time to grieve.
Another positive point is that you and your remaining family members wouldn’t have to stay up late to keep watch compared to funerals at home.
The drawback of some funeral parlors is that they are in places that are not easy to access. This can be difficult for loved ones who are unfamiliar with the area or do not have private transportation.
2. A House With Its Own Land
You will need to obtain a permit to hold the wake from the Land Transport Authority if you plan to use part of the road outside your home during the wake e.g. for parking.
This option is convenient for guests, and gives loved ones the opportunity to keep vigil together. However, they may have problems with accessing parking space, which may inconvenience your neighbors.
3. Apartment Grounds
You will need to seek permission from the management of the apartment or condo to hold the wake. You will also need a permit from the Town Council.
4. HDB Void Deck
The wake may be held in the void deck of the deceased or that of another member of the family. Like with private apartments, you will also need to seek a permit from the Town Council.
Funerals are major events. They are an especially big deal in Singapore. Asian communities invest in lavish send-offs as an expression of their love for the deceased. Funerals and wakes can therefore extend over several days.
The length of the funeral is also influenced by the religion and culture of the deceased and their family. For example, Muslims require he deceased to be buried within 24 hours of their passing. Some Chinese cultures believe that wakes should be held for an odd number of days as a symbol of the incomplete cycle of life and in the hope of the deceased being reincarnated.
Funerals in Singapore can extend over 2 to 7 days in Singapore. Funerals that last for several days are costlier. For example, a Buddhist funeral would cost about $3,780 if it is held for 3 days. However, the same funeral home would cost $4,680 for 5 days.
After saying goodbye to your loved one, comes the time to lay them to rest. This means different things to different people. For most people it means either having a burial or a cremation.
There are only three crematoriums in Singapore. Mandai Crematorium is the only government owned crematorium. Tse Toh Aum Temple and Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery are private crematoriums. Cremation at a government facility will cost $100. Private facilities charge between $321 and $535.
Following cremation, you can seek a niche in a columbarium for the storage of your urn. You can also have a marble plaque engraved with details of your loved one to cover the niche. Most Singaporeans opt to have the urns stored at one of the three government columbaria. There are about 60 private ones on the island.
The average cost of an urn is $250. A niche in a government columbarium can cost between $500 and $900. A niche in a private facility can cost between $1,100 and $5,800. If you want a marble plaque, you will have to fork out $1,000 more for the plaque.
2. Burials On Land
We all know that land is scare in Singapore. Due to the limited space available, burial periods are limited to only 15 years. The remains of those buried at the cemetery are exhumed for cremation or re-interring.
Burial on land costs $940 for Christian, Hindu and Chinese burials and $315 for Bahai, Parsi and Muslim burials.
3. Burial At Sea
Burials at sea are becoming a common option. These are carried out at 2.8km south of the cost of Pualu Semakau. They can only be done between 7am and 7pm with the help of the Marine Port Authority’s Marine Safety Control Centre.
The cost of the burial will depend on the materials used. The cost of these burials can be as low as $80 while others can exceed $1,000. Burials using scattering tubes cost $200. Using bio-degradable urns can cost anything from $175.
These burials are considered one of the most environmentally friendly options and are much cheaper than traditional land burials or cremations.
Whether you choose to bury or cremate your loved one, their body will be stored in a casket for the wake and burial process. The type of casket you choose will affect the costs of the funeral.
1. Wooden Caskets
These are the most common types of caskets. They are often made from hardwoods such as cherry, mahogany, walnut as well as oak. Hardwood caskets are the more expensive option. Pine, veneer and poplar caskets are a cheaper option. These can cost anything starting from $700.
2. Metal Caskets
These are the most expensive caskets and prices usually start from almost $2,000. You can get them in copper or bronze. These metals are used because they don’t rust. These caskets aren’t a good option for cremation
3. Paper Caskets
These are available for those who are more conscious of the impact of their activities on the environment. The can cost anything from $1,000. They are considered green caskets as they are biodegradable. They are made of either recycled paper or light wood.
